Training Through Menopause

Perimenopause and menopause change how your body responds to training. We’ll build a plan that matches what this stage actually asks for.

Sound familiar?

It’s not that you stopped trying.

Maybe you’ve added more cardio, cut calories, tried a new class, or started walking every day. The effort went up. The results did not.

Recovery takes longer. Sleep is worse. Strength and energy feel like they’re slipping away. Most women are told this is just what happens now. What actually changed is the hormonal environment your body builds muscle and bone in, so the training has to change too.

That’s the part we care about.
Who we help

If any of this sounds like you

These are some of the patterns we see most often.

Strength has stalled You’re training, but you’re not getting stronger +

The same routine may no longer be enough stimulus. Muscle still responds at this stage. What stops working is under-loading and random exercise.

Body composition changed The scale moved, or your shape did, and nothing you tried helped +

Declining estrogen changes how you store fat and hold muscle. More cardio and fewer calories often make it worse. Strength and protein are the levers that matter here.

Worried about your bones A DEXA scan, a family history, or a doctor’s warning has you concerned +

Bone loss accelerates around menopause. Progressive resistance training is one of the few things shown to stimulate bone formation and preserve density.

Energy, sleep, and mood You’re tired, foggy, or not feeling like yourself +

Sleep disruption and mood changes are common at this stage. Regular strength work is consistently linked to better sleep quality and mood.

Nervous about lifting heavy You’ve been told to be careful, so you’ve stayed light +

Many women are afraid loading their body is dangerous. Done progressively and coached well, loading is exactly what bone and muscle need.

New to strength training You’ve never lifted, or it’s been decades +

You don’t need experience to start. We assess where you are, teach the movements, and build from there at a pace that fits you.

This stage looks different for everyone. Knowing what your body needs starts with knowing where you are right now.

What the research says

Not all training counts the same

Most advice for this stage stops at “lift weights.” The research is more specific than that. Three findings shape how we program.

01

The load has to be meaningful

Bone responds to mechanical stress, and the size of that stress determines the result. A 2025 meta-analysis found intensity, frequency, and duration separate the programs that change bone density from the ones that do not. Light weights that never change are not a stimulus.

02

Three days a week, an hour a session

A 2024 systematic review in Climacteric put a number on the dose: three days per week, 60-minute sessions, for improvements in quality of life, functionality, and disease prevention. That is the schedule we build toward.

Climacteric systematic review, 2024 →
03

The benefits reach past bone and muscle

A randomised trial found resistance training improved physical fitness, mental health, and sleep quality in postmenopausal women. A separate 2024 meta-analysis found it reduced hot flashes.

What that means for your plan

We assess where you are, program a load you can handle, and increase it on purpose. Then we re-measure, so we know the training is doing what the research says it should.

Why it matters

This is the one thing that works on both

Around menopause, women lose bone and muscle at the same time. Walking protects neither. Cardio protects your heart but not your skeleton. Resistance training is the only intervention that loads bone and builds muscle at once, and the effects reach further than that. Tap a marker to see where.

Lower anxiety Fewer depressive symptoms Endorphin response Confidence
Fall asleep faster Fewer night wakings Better recovery Less daytime fatigue
Reduced frequency Reduced severity Better temperature tolerance

What’s different

Why this beats the alternatives

Most options ask you to fit yourself to the program. A class runs the same session whether you slept or not. An app cannot see your form. Here, the program fits you, and keeps fitting you as this stage moves.

Not a class you keep up with

Group fitness sets one pace for the room. We assess you first and set the entry point from what you can do well today, whether you have never lifted or are coming back after years away.

Not left to figure it out at a big box gym

A coach is in the room correcting the lift and choosing the weight. Load and volume climb on a plan, because that is what builds bone and muscle. We record what you lift, so progression is a decision rather than a guess.

Not a program that ignores the hard weeks

Bad sleep, a flare-up, a stretch of stress. Your coach adjusts that day’s session instead of asking you to push through it. If something hurts, a Doctor of Physical Therapy is down the hall, working off the same plan.

The questions people ask first

Am I too old, or too out of shape, to start? +

No. We assess where you are right now and build from there. We regularly start women who have never lifted a weight, and women coming back after decades away. The starting point is not the problem. Not having a plan is.

Is lifting heavy safe for me? +

Loading is what bone and muscle respond to, and the research on postmenopausal women supports meaningful, progressive load. What makes it safe is coaching and progression, not avoiding weight. We teach the movements, start at a load you can handle well, and increase it deliberately.

Will strength training make me bulky? +

No. Building significant muscle mass takes years of dedicated effort. Most women notice the opposite: feeling leaner, more capable, and better supported through the joints.

I already walk and do cardio. Isn’t that enough? +

Cardio is good for your heart, and walking is worth doing. Neither loads bone or builds muscle the way resistance training does. They work best together, and strength is the piece most women are missing.

What if something hurts, or I have an old injury? +

Our physical therapy team is in the same building. If a joint is not cooperating, your coach and a Doctor of Physical Therapy work off the same plan so you can keep training while it is addressed.
